In my family, by "bukovec" we mean something other than the crushed red pepper itself. I inherited this wonderful Macedonian (Ohrid) recipe for a food supplement from my husband's family. We always have Bukovec prepared and we use it as a regular addition to some dishes.
- Chop the walnuts or beat in a mortar, add a little salt and heat in a pan for 10 minutes on low heat, stirring constantly.
- Add the cooled walnuts and salt to the crushed hot red pepper and mix well.
- Add finely crushed dry mint leaves (you can also use mint tea from the pharmacy), finely crushed savory (mountain savory, heather or mountain mint) to this mixture with your fingers and mix everything well.
- Leave for a couple of hours in a closed container to combine the aromas. It can be stored for several days.
Macedonian addition (spice) that is added with cold baking and other dishes as desired.
