An old recipe, something between žgvacet, ragout, goulash and paprikash (but without paprika), generous and economical, passed on to you directly from the kitchen of my ancestors. The only thing I changed in the recipe was my addition of Mediterranean spices - mine only put bay leaf and parsley, but I find it much tastier with rosemary and marjoram.

I am sure that on Sundays in Istria this lunch is cooked by many housewives, including me. As a child, I could hardly wait for my mother to take out her batter to knead the dough because I was looking forward to kneading the batter for her pljukanci (macaroni). Of course, I would also take part in making pljukanca and those moments were special for me and my mother. As I live in Istria, you can buy real pljukanci from local pasta producers who taste as good as mom's.

In Italy, this sauce is called shugo or salsa di pomodoro, in Italian-American cuisine it is marinara sauce ...
